Trade Union Concerned About Increase In Rate Of Unemployment


Trade Union Cosatu has reiterated its call for a summit to be held to address, the on-going retrenchments and the increase in the unemployment rate in South Africa.

The unemployment statistics report released on Monday, showed that 355 000 jobs were lost in the first quarter of 2016, adding to the expanded unemployment rate of 8.9 million people.

Cosatu General Secretary Bheki Ntshalintshali says: “We have been calling for a job summit since the forum we had in 2009 which was titled the South African response to the global crisis, we are calling for social dialogues in which social partners at a senior level can come together and try to map up solutions to the challenges.”

He added that there are many issues that need to address in terms of job security.

Unemployment is a challenge in South Africa and government needs to identify better strategies, while implementation and transformation is important adds Ntshalintshali.
