Accommodation Direct released its list of cheapest and most expensive holiday destinations in South Africa last month. We’ve already given you tips for nine budget-friendly options to explore, but now it’s time to see how the other half lives.
Keep in mind that these are average prices for the listings on this specific website. Obviously with a bit of digging you can find something more budget friendly in these areas…but for the purposes of this exercise… we’re looking at luxury!
1. Bantry Bay
Average price per night: R5320
The website actually listed quite a few “affordable” options – in the region of around R1500 per night – but the luxury accommodation of places like The Clarendon (R12 000 per night) means the average price has shot up quite a bit.
Average price per night: R5762
Hermanus has long been a holiday favourite for many South Africans and indeed, there are options to suit all pockets with some guest lodges having rooms for as low as R450 per night. However, places like The Marine (R5000 per night) and Abalone Lodge (R3750) catapults this holiday town into the top ten.
3. Klaserie Private Nature Reserve
Average price per night: R6262
Viewing wild life in private reserves will always cost a pretty penny. There’s a bush camp listed for R400 per night, but Amani Safari Camp (R8890) and Camp George (R12 085) will make your eyes – and credit card – water.
4. Madikwe Reserve
Average price per night: R7262
We’re into the proper posh bits now. The game lodges here are priced between R2600 to R13 000 per night. Must be nice.
5. Welgevonden Game Reserve
Average price per night: R7522
If you’ve got R45 000 lying around then you can afford one night at the luxury Mhondoro Game Lodge. If that’s a bit pricy for your liking, don’t worry. There’s walsy the MolenVilet lodge for a comparatively bargain price of R10 100 per night.
6. Camps Bay
Average price per night: R10 002
There are a few perfectly reasonably priced spots available in Camps Bay, but there’s plenty of luxury, too. The Hollywood Mansions is priced at R25 000 per night just like the Galazzio Villas.
7. Manyeleti Game Reserve
Average price per night: R10 800
You can “rough it” at the Manyeleti Game Reserve for around R2500 per night. And by “rough it” we mean glamp it up in some really fancy tents. Alternatively, if your pockets are deep, the Tintswalo Manor house offers accommodation from around R24 000 per night and the Safari Lodge will sort you out for R16 800 per night.
8. Sabi Sands Game Reserve
Average price per night: R13 550
Sabi Sands is probably one of the most popular destination for tourists and the prices show as much. On AccomodationDirect’s website, there are no options for under R8 950.
9. Cape Town
Average price per night: R22 775
So, Cape Town is defined rather broadly in this instance, but anyone who has even tried to rent a house in the Atlantic Seaboard or surrounds will tell your tales of elevated blood pressure at the sight of these prices. The expensive surrounds of Clifton, Camps Bay, Llandudno and a few others mean the average cost for Cape Town is at the very top end of the scale. Still, the good news is you can stay in the Hilton for around R4700 per night.
Average price per night: R28 513
It’s hardly a surprise that one of the most exclusive spots in Cape Town is also the most expensive. If you really want to live it up, you can check into Oceana for a cool R90 000 per night. If that’s a bit out of your price range, don’t worry… Kloof Villa has accommodation for R25 000 per night or the Ivory Sands Villa will cost you just R16 524.
