South Africa has a seven-man team which is competing at the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) World Indoor Championships which started in Portland, Oregon, on Thursday.
Ruswahl Samaai (long jump), Ofentse Mogawane (4x400m), Thapelo Phora (4x400m), Jon Seeliger (4x400m), Sonwabiso Skhosana (4x400m), Shaun de Jager (4x400m) and Antonio Alkana (60m hurdles) make up the South African contingent.
Samaai, who will compete on Sunday night in his long jump event, said the SA team are ready to produce a good showing.
“We all know each other by now because most of the guys have been travelling with each other for quite some time, and although we’re a small team… we’re not here to fill up the lanes. We are here to compete,” said Samaai.
Mogawane, 34, will lead the men’s relay and said his team were motivated for the event despite a big adjustment in time-zone.
“It’s not easy to make a quick adjustment (to the nine-hour time difference), also taking into account the opposite season here, but we have to be focussed,” Mogawane said.
“It is cold here, but it’s not too bad, and the mood in the whole camp is 100 % up.”
