See How Art Transformed The Site Of Arrest Of Nelson Mandela In South Africa

This arrest set in motion a chain of events that would make Mandela a legend: 27 years in prison, his evolution as a freedom fighter, and his subsequent release and ascendance to president of a newly democratic South Africa. The Mandela Capture Site is a top Mandela tourism destination in South Africa.

From most angles, this 2012 sculpture by South African artist Marco Cianfanelli looks like  jagged-edged steel columns jutting out of the Earth, but shift slightly to one side and a profile of Nelson Mandela appears. Located near Howick, South Africa, the sculpture marks the spot where Mandela was captured and arrested by authorities in 1962.
