Cheick Tiote’s body has been flown back to the Ivory Coast and a private funeral for the former Newcastle midfielder will take place in his homeland.
Hundreds of people gathered at Abidjan’s International Airport to receive Tiote’s body on Thursday including former team-mates Kolo Toure, Wilfried Bony, Gervinho, Siake Tiene and his former coach Herve Renard.
Bony was among the players who helped carry the coffin out of the airport.
Tiote tragically passed away after he collapsed during a training session with his Chinese club Beijing Enterprises.
A memorial service was held in the Chinese capital on Tuesday which was attended by family, friends and former team-mates.
Former Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse fought back the tears as he spoke about his friend and Tiote’s Beijing Enterprises team-mates also paid their respects.
