The South African Broadcast Corporation (SABC) Foundation has donated school uniforms and shoes to thousands of learners of the Kamiesberg region in the Northern Cape.
Nine schools in the district benefited from the donation of more than R300 000 worth of clothing.
In an area where poverty is rife and unemployment figures are high the foundation hopes to improve the lives of residents with the single largest donation to a community.
The CEO of the SABC Foundation Iris Cupido says they chose the district because of the high levels of poverty and the number of school drop outs.
Cupido says two top performing matric pupils from the Kharkams Combined School where the hand over took place, will also receive full bursaries worth over more than R400 000 to further their studies.
She has encouraged learners to rise above the circumstances and use education to improve their lives.
The principals of the schools have welcomed the donation saying most parents cannot afford the much needed uniforms.
