Remember when acting police commissioner Kgomotso Phahlane made the news for reportedly fighting off robbers at a spa… well, new footage shows it didn’t quite play out the way they said.
Back in June SA’s new top cop made the news when it was reported that he fought off some crooks at the Ayothaya spa in Dunkeld, but video footage posted by News24 shows a different story.
According to the initial police report, Phahlane fought off the robbers and chased them from the scene, and while the video shows him putting up a fight, he dives behind the couch, leaving his wife and spa staff to contend with the crooks.
Shortly after the incident, the Hawks told news24 that Phahlane went to the spa with his wife and, while sitting in the car spotted the two men entering the spa. That’s when he decided to take action.
“He fought with the two guys with the view to take away the firearms. He managed to ward them off and they ran away.”
Now, while the first half of the story checks out, the video footage shows that what happened next didn’t quite follow the police’s story.
“There is no dispute on the sequence of events which unfolded on the day of the attack at the spa.”
“It is unfortunate that you are suggesting a misrepresentation of facts which will be found nowhere in the department’s reporting on the matter. It is found suspicious or why you are in possession of such recordings which is a subject of investigation [sic]. Such recordings can under no circumstances be made public,” Phahlane’s spokesperson Brigadier Mashadi Selepe told News24.
