As the year gradually winds down, some political office holders have urged South Africans to exercise prudence in spending money this yuletide. Among them is Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema.

In the early hours of Wednesday, Juju took to his Twitter account to warn his mammoth supporters against extravagant and flamboyant lifestyle this season.

In as much as it’s good to have a good time and make friends and loved ones happy in the spirit of “Ke Dezemba Boss”, Juju warned that good management of personal resources and careful budgeting shouldn’t be shoved aside. He reminded his fans that it’s no news that people who spend recklessly in the yuletide usually sing a different tune when it comes to payment of necessary bills like rent and schools in the new year. “Hehe Moreki, hehe Ke December boss,

Come January ke kgopela ya school fees sa ngwana. Ke kgopela ya rente, Pasop #Moreki,” he said. Malema’s carefully-thought advice was , however, received with mixed feelings. Some expressed happiness with the unsolicited message while others ditched it, telling him to keep off his eye on how they spend their money. Some also reacted by uploading funny memes and comments.

Last month, many saw a massive adoption of North American retail trends – Black Friday in South Africa. It was apparent from how the shopping adventure went down, that it has now been embedded in the minds of South Africans.

An expenditure statistics shared by Western Cape premier and former Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Helen Zille days after the adventure showed that South Africans spent hugely on that day.

The statistics also showed that “39% of expenditure went on an alcohol and 29% on food on ‘black Friday’. The premier slammed South Africans who spent a disproportionate amount of their income largely in purchasing alcohol on that day.
