News of Jub Jub’s release has sparked a heated debate on social media on Thursday after it dawned on everyone that the convicted killer Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye is out on parole.
It was confirmed on Thursday morning by Correctional Services that Jub Jub and his co-accused Themba Tshabalala had been released on parole after serving four years of their eight years sentences.
Spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said in a statement;
“The Department of Correctional Services can confirm the parole placement of Katlego Molemo Maarohanye and Themba Shabalala as approved by the Correctional Supervision and Parole Boards (CSPBs) of Leeuwkop and Baviaanspoort with effect from 5 January 2017.”
The decision was met with mixed reactions on social media. While some welcomed the decision to release the duo, some others expressed anger, saying the punishment does not compliment the crime committed by the pair. Then on a lighter mood, some Twitter users made jokes out of the release of the artist. His case was also compared to that of Olympian Oscar Pistorius.
As a result, a fierce debate erupted on social media, as people expressed their opinion on the pair’s release.

Molemo ‘JUB JUB’ Maarohanye and his co-accused, Tshabalala were on October 16, 2012, found guilty of so many crimes by the Protea Magistrate’s Court in Soweto. Some of the charges include – murder, attempted murder, driving under the influence of drugs, and racing on a public road.
The pair crashed their Mini Coopers into a group of schoolboys in Protea North, Soweto, on March 8, 2010, while on a drag race. By October 2014, their murder convictions were overturned and converted to culpable homicide convictions. They were handed 20 years for murder at the time. Subsequently, their sentences were reduced to 10 years, two of which were suspended.
