Do not talk down about a man without tracing his history.
When next you wish to crucify SABC’s former COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng for not being academically qualified to have handled keys positions in the SABC, just remember his background affected his education.
While we thought Hlaudi lacked formal qualification due to intellectual deficiency, former South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) board chairman Ben Ngubane has come out to state reasons why the arrogant former COO has no matric certificate.
Testifying in the parliamentary inquiry into the affairs of the SABC on Friday, Ben Ngubane told MPs that SABC’s Hlaudi, the one without a matric certificate, is a very skilled person, regardless of the fact that he has no formal qualifications.
“On the issue of matric, Hlaudi was appointed at SABC in 1995. Hlaudi had been a street kid without parents, without a home. He reached a level of matric but he couldn’t finish that, Ngubane told MPs.
He recalled that Lesedi FM’s dramatic improvement and upgrade were successfully spearheaded by Motsoeneng after he provided basic information to the local radio station.
“There is no protection Mr Motsoeneng or we [former board] get from the President,” he insisted.
Ngubane also condemned former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s report on SABC – in which she found Hlaudi increased his salary by 63%. He told MPs that Hlaudi’s salary was not irregularly adjusted several times, as earlier testified by the former acting chief executive, Phil Molefe.
When asked about his feelings towards the repulsive state of the corporation and if he felt guilty about destroying it, Ngubane became angry and refused to accept he destroyed the corporation.
He yelled: “I did not cause damage at SABC. I saved the SABC. It was bankrupt when we [former board] came. It was a mess. We sat around trying to stop the haemorrhaging of money. There was huge theft going on…. so don’t accuse me falsely of destroying the SABC.”
Ben Ngubane also refused to answer questions about his relationship with the controversial Gupta family. He insisted allegations of state capture contained in former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s report is being reviewed.
