As the world commemorates No Tobacco Day, the Gauteng Health department is advocating for a total ban on tobacco advertisements.
World No Tobacco Day is marked to highlight the harm caused by tobacco use and to advocate for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption.
Gauteng health will hold an event in Soweto on Tuesday under the theme, “Get ready for plain packaging” with emphasis on packaging of tobacco products.
The Department’s Steve Mabona says research indicates that plain and standardised packaging reduces the appeal in tobacco.
“We are working very hard, we would just want to make sure that tobacco is not advertised. Now, we are looking at the packaging.”
