City councilors in Johannesburg have collectively upheld free transport for the matured and individuals with incapacities amid off-crest times.
The Speaker in the Johannesburg board, Vasco da Gama, said on Monday that the movement, tabled a week ago, had gotten overpowering help.
Cope councillor Devanand Maharaj, who tabled the motion, believed that enhancing the mobility of pensioners and persons with disabilities would improve their access to basic services and economic opportunities, as well as their well-being, Da Gama said.
Member of the mayoral committee responsible for transport Nonhlanhla Makhuba recommended the council make a budget available for the free rides.
She also recommended that the pilot project be launched in the 2018/19 financial year.
