Four Common Skincare Mistakes You May Be Making

If your skincare routine leaves your skin feeling less than great, you may be making one of these four mistakes

1. Thinking a beard is an easy way out

It’s always important to remember that there is skin underneath your beard. Even though that part of your face is ‘hidden’, you still need to care for it.

Beards can cause a lot of irritation, leaving skin dry, red and itchy. To get past your beard to the skin underneath, be extra vigilant when lathering your cleanser and exfoliater over your beard so that it penetrates properly. It’s advisable to use a skin oil, or a light serum on your face because their formula is much thinner and lighter, penetrating through the beard into the skin more easily.

2. Treating all skin the same

It’s easy to get caught in a skincare rut, but as you grow older, it’s important to know your skin type – oily, dry, normal, sensitive or combination – so you can invest in products that are specifically formulated to meet your unique needs.

The reason you might not notice any results after trying a product is because it might not have been right for your skin type.

Exfoliating too often

Exfoliation is the one part of your skincare routine that provides immediate results. For this reason, many guys tend to over-exfoliate, which can actually be worse than not using an exfoliator at all.

The purpose of exfoliation is to remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin, and because of the harshness of this process, you should never exfoliate more than one to two times a week.

Over-exfoliation can damage your skin’s protective barrier, which can cause irritation, flaking and dryness.

Using a soap bar

Soap bars have been a staple in most homes for generations, but if you want the best results, washing your face with a bar of soap is a no-no. Always opt for a gel cleanser.

Conventional soap bars are quite harsh and can strip the skin of moisture and cause dead skin cells to build up quicker. They leave your skin feeling tight and dry.
