FIFA’S 1st Female Secreatry General Officially Resumes Duty

The first woman and first non-European to hold the job of Fifa Secretary General has officially started work at football’s scandal-tainted governing body.

Senegalese Fatma Samoura says her first order of business is to fill senior positions including chief financial officer and chief compliance officer.

Samoura was named to the job last month, in a surprise move by Fifa President Gianni Infantino, seeking to fix football’s governing body’s reputation since after taking over from the disgraced Sepp Blatter.

Samoura worked at the United Nations for more than 20 years, mostly in Africa.

Her two predecessors as Secretary General, Jerome Valcke and Markus Kattner, were both sacked over corruption allegations.

Valcke is the target of a criminal investigation in Switzerland, along with Blatter.

Samoura says boosting morale at Fifa is crucial.
