They may have opted for the entertainment industry, doing whatever it is we do in this field.
But many South African celebs and athletes are actually brainy.
Don’t be fooled. The game is packed with politicians, lawyers, radiologists and accountants, amongst others, who tossed their qualifications aside to fully pursue their passion in the arts.
JIMMY TAU – QUALIFIED CHARTERED ACCOUNTANT
He’s had an outstanding career as a soccer player and then later a sports commentator, but Jimmy Tau’s roots are actually in Accounting, where he went all the way. That should explain how he has become a successful businessman.
AEWON WOLF – LAWYER
Aewon Wolf has an LLB Degree. Yes, he is making waves in the Durban music scene with his trap sound and looks fresh as hell (Sorry, it had to be mentioned), but he’s also a qualified lawyer. We bet he wouldn’t have issues scoring clients this one.
DASH – GRAPHICS DESIGNER
Dreamteam frontman and VUZU presenter Dash may just one of the coolest celebs right now, but he is a Qualified graphics designer. And he’s pretty good! How do we know? He’s designed a lot of the artwork for the group.
IFANI – COMPUTER SCIENCE
Ifani has admitted to have been a geeky bookworm back in high school, a revelation that will surprise but just a few. Before pursuing a career in Hip Hop, the rapper graduated a BSc (Honours) in Computer Engineering at the University of Cape Town.
GIGI LAMAYNE – MEDIA
Gigi Lamayne graduated at the top of her Media Studies class at Wits University. Which says a lot, because everyone knows that institution does not play. The fact that she did all of that while juggling it with a demanding career in Hip Hop is true inspiration.
SINAZO YOLWA – ACCOUNTANT
Real Gobhoza television presenter Sinazo Yolwa has always been a girl on the move. Although she’s now pursuing a thriving career in television, she could have easily decided to be an accountant. She has a Bachelor of Commerce Degree in Accounting from UCT.
LEHLOGONOLO MAJORO – RADIOLOGIST
Lehlohonolo Majoro is undoubtedly one of South Africa’s most successful soccer players, but he also he graduated as a radiologist from the University of Witwatersrand. It’s all thanks to his parents, who insisted that he get an academic qualification to fall back on if all fails. Notably, 95% of the players in the PSL are said to be without any tertiary qualification.
RIAAD MOOSA – QUALIFIED MEDICAL DOCTOR
Riaad Moosa describes himself as “a comedian with an underutilized medical degree.” He’s not being funny, it’s true. Riaad may have prioritised a successful career as a comedian and actor, but he is also a doctor.
K.O – PUBLIC RELATIONS
Ntokozo Mdluli, known to the masses as K.O, boasts one of most commercially successful Hip Hop careers in the country both as one third of Teargas and later as a solo artist. But before things panned out as per destiny, he graduated from Vaal University of Technology with a Degree in PR. While we are happy he didn’t end up behind the scenes making others look good, the influence of his qualification in his branding is quite evident.
L-TIDO – MARKETING
The Dlala Ka Yona rapper graduated at Wits University with a B-Com Degree in Marketing. He turned his focus fully to his rap career, but we’re sure he’s applied a lot of the reading packs to his appeal to the public.
