Durban’s bracing for an all-women boxing tournament. Friday’s tournament, billed as the Queens of War, will feature some of the country’s finest fighters.
SA Boxer Nonni ‘She Bee Stinging’ Tenge, says, “This is the fifth world title on the junior middle weight division, on the welterweight division. I’m holding four world titles. I’m rated No. 2 in WBC and rated No.1 in WBA.”
The champion boxer, from the Eastern Cape, packs a real punch. She’s taking on Hungarian Szilvia Szabados in a 10 Rounder World Boxing Federation Junior Middleweight title fight.
Tenge says, “I spar with male boxers and they are stronger than me because I’m a woman, but I always say that when it comes to the tournament I always have an advantage.”
Hungarian Boxer Szilvia ‘Sunset’ Szabados, says, “I’m confident; I’m strong; I’m waiting. I see myself as a lion … No, like a tiger.”
Two South African 10 rounder title fights as well as four junior bouts are also on the cards.
Boxing SA Chairperson Muditambi Ravele, says, “We are trying to make sure that we give more of these woman opportunity to actually participate in boxing and make sure that they keep active because one of the biggest challenge is the fact they are not active. Most of the fights are male boxers and not female boxers and we are creating this platform for them to participate.”
The event will be broadcast live at 9:30pm on SABC 2 and selected SABC radio stations.
