Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane has told residents in Nelson Mandela Bay that his party is the only one that can deliver on its promises – and if it doesn’t, he will resign.
The politician was speaking at Booysens Park, in one of the most hotly contested metros in the country.
Campaigning in the metro has been ongoing for years, but has reached boiling point in recent months as the ruling ANC’s grip on the municipality has slipped so significantly that it is seen as a sure-win for the DA.
Polling over the past six weeks indicates that the DA is the leading party in the metro, and is likely to snatch the city away from the ANC in August 2016.
Politicians from all major parties – including the ANC and EFF – have been in the province to rally support.
Maimane took aim at the ANC, saying that its leader, Jacob Zuma was “fundamentally corrupt”, and that the party had failed the people in job creation. He said only the DA can and would deliver.
“I’m so invested in the DA, we the DA must deliver and if we don’t, I myself will resign,” he told residents.
“We are the only government that can deliver, the ANC has long neglected the people. Our focus is to create work particularly in the Northern Areas because people just don’t find work,” Maimane said.
