2017 is finally the year of Wonder Woman. Lynda Carter took up the lasso in 1975 on TV, more than 40 years later the Amazonian warrior finally powered her way into the on-screen DC universe.
In celebration of Wonder Women on the big screen, here are seven great actresses to go to the movies to see in 2017:
1. Wonder Woman – March 2017
An Israeli actress finally cracked the whip after years of false starts in which the likes of Sandra Bullock and Megan Fox were rumoured to be the super heroine. With eye-candy Chris Pine to rescue, Gal Gadot is set to be a fine addition to the universe after making her debut in Batman vs Superman this year.
2. Beauty and the Beast – April 2017
Emma Watson, who made her fortune as Hermoine Grainger, returns to fuel the imaginations of another generation of children. Belle, the heroine of this Disney film, is famously the first princess to be about more than looking pretty, singing and marrying the first handsome fellow to come along. It will be great to see what the HeForShe ambassador does with this role. The eye-candy factor is supplied by Dan Stevens, most famous as Matthew in BBC’s Downton Abbey.
3. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 – May 2017
I know hot Chris Pratt is the main man in this part of the Marvel Universe, but without Gamora (Zoe Saldana), well, he wouldn’t know which end of the universe to try and rip off first. The best fun you can have saving life forms from annihilation, I can’t wait to get my hands on the soundtrack.
4. Fast 8 – April 2017
Charlize Theron joins muscle men Vin Diesl and Dwayne Johnson for the latest high-octane car adventure. She is Cipher, the baddie of the latest instalment in the franchise. It is also rumoured that Cody Walker, the late Paul Walker’s brother, joins the cast, and look out for Helen Mirren too as the matriarch.
5. Star Wars: Rise of the Jedi Episode VIII – December 2017
Rey returns to her quest in the eighth movie in the Star Wars universe. Daisy Ridley continues the tradition of self-possessed women in this franchise. Carrie Fisher’s Princess Leia was always a woman who helped herself, so if you are after damsels in distress, this franchise is not for you.

6. Kong: Skull Island – March 2017
This year’s Oscar winner for Room, Brie Larson, plays another strong female character in this action adventure that explores the origins of the great King Kong. As Fay Wray (1933), Jessica Lange (1976), Naomi Watts (2005) and now Larson know, when it comes to managing the clash between man and beast, a woman knows best.
7. Alien: Covenant – August 2017
Katherine Waterston, most recently seen as a witch in the wonderful return to the Harry Potteruniverse Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, leads the cast of Ridley Scott’s latest foray into the Alien franchise. This is the sequel to Prometheus, made in 2012. Returning stars include Michael Fassbender, which is also a good reason to see it, and Noomi Rapace as Elizabeth Shaw.
