It’s all systems go for the 22nd Annual South African Music Awards (SAMA22) in Durban on Saturday night.
Nominated musicians as well as participating artists have worked round the clock to perfect the production.
The awards will be aired live on SABC1.
The stage is set for the country’s biggest musical event which promises to be a musical spectacle themed “the future is here”.
This year’s edition will explore a fresh element with new hosts TV personalities Somizi Mhlongo and actress Thando Thabethe.
“This is the best decision management has made. Thando and I get along quite well. Our energies are in sync. We’ve seen previous presenters always doing the same thing but we are going to change that. We bring something fresh and alive,” says Mhlongo.
With over 30 categories nominees are no doubt feeling the pressure. Among them is newcomer Mthembeni Ndevu popularly known as Emtee, who’s received five nominations.
“I’m nominated five times but I’m competing with the best artists in the country, so anything can happen. I haven’t been in the industry for long but the reception is amazing. I’m quite honoured and I’m hoping for the best,” says Emtee.
Others are humbled by the nomination.
“Being nominated for awards of such magnitude is quite an achievement in itself. It shows that the South African audience has welcomed my craft and they see me deserving of the honour as one of the best,” says Fifi Cooper.
This year’s event includes an outreach programme.
All nominated artists visited different communities around Durban on Friday.
