The World Cup is coming soon!
Remember the last one in Brazil? When defending champions, Spain, crashed out and was trashed by both Netherlands and Chile. Or the epic 7 to 1 goal defeat of host, Brazil by the Germans? Or the tears when Argentina lost to Germany? Or the awesome showings by goalkeepers in the tournament?
The next FIFA World Cup is coming up in 2018 and Russia is the host country.
And we can’t wait for the start of the tournament.
But there is a big catch. Not every nation on earth will get to go to the next World Cup.
Every nation has to fight tooth and nail for a chance to secure a spot on the available 32 places. This is how most football fans see the WC qualifiers:
Only a privileged few make it to the World Cup after fighting for a qualification.
And for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, here are the teams that have qualified so far:
- South Korea
- Saudi Arabia
- Iceland: The smallest nation to ever qualify for the FIFA World Cup.
- Russia: As host, their qualification is automatic.
- Costa Rica
So far, 17 nations have qualified for the tournament. But there are still those who could still qualify.
Yes, we’re talking about playoffs and those in second place. These are countries whose qualification are in contention and would have to play to qualify for the tournament:
- The Democratic Republic of Congo
- Burkina Faso
- Ivory Coast
- Cape Verde
- South Africa
- United States
- New Zealand
- Northern Ireland
- The Republic of Ireland
These 32 nations are going to duke it out for the remaining 15 qualification spots. Some countries are favourites to qualify and we can’t wait to see what the next few days will bring.
