The ANC Women’s League has resolved itself – and perhaps also resigned itself – to towing the party line and defending Zuma regardless of his crimes. That’s all good and well, it’s the party’s prerogative to choose how it deals with scandal.
What’s not within its scope of authority is to second-guess and even judge the actions of a Chapter Nine institution, especially when said institution’s powers were recently clarified by the highest court in the country.
So it goes that the ANCWL earlier this week lashed out at our Public Protector, calling her a populist and second-guessing her objectivity.
Madonsela responded by saying that the ANC Women’s League should focus on fighting for gender equality and not busy themselves with battles which is not their own.
“I really just think they are being misled. I think a lot of them are being used as proxies and I really feel sorry for them,” SA’s sweetheart said after ANCWL secretary general Meokgo Matuba’s attack on her.
“Women shouldn’t just be fighting for gender equality, they should be fighting for making sure that the state of South Africa is advancing everyone, because when the state fails, it’s women who pick up the burden.”
“I am not their enemy, maladministration is their enemy.”
