Looking after our skin is not an easy task. It’s our body’s largest organ, and for this reason you have to get your skin care regime absolutely right. Otherwise, you’re going to end up with blemishes, fine lines, wrinkles, dark circles … and even acne breakouts.
We all know the basics of skin care; we have to rinse our face at least twice a day, while we absolutely must stick to a cleanser that is suitable for our skin type. But apart from these two rules, there are many mistakes lots of us are making on a daily basis. And it’s wreaking havoc with our good looks, and ageing us quicker than we’d like.

Failing To Use A Moisturiser With SPF Daily
Lots of us know we should moisturise during the cold wintry months when the dry air irritates our skin and basically dries it out. But far too many of us wrongly assume that we can get away with moisturising less in the summer.
For best results, it’s important that you moisturise with an SPF of at least 20 each day. Sunscreen in makeup is an okay combination, but it just doesn’t grant you the same kind of coverage as SPF lotion does.
You might be the type of person who only pops out of the house now and then, perhaps to do the grocery shopping or pick your kids up. But it doesn’t matter – your skin is still at risk of getting damaged by the sun.
Exfoliating Too Much
Exfoliating is important, and I recommend it. But did you know that there is such a thing as over exfoliating? If you didn’t, there’s a good chance you’re already doing it.
Removing too much of your skin’s top layer is damaging in the longer term. You’re eliminating your skin’s protective barrier and exposing it to toxins in the air, as well as sun damage. This in time can accelerate the ageing process.
Failing To Pat Dry
If you have sensitive skin (as I do!), it’s super important that instead of rubbing your face after you’ve rinsed it, you instead pat it dry.
Why? Tugging at your skin with a towel can easily cause irritation. If you’ve been tugging for years, it essentially means that your skin has been losing its natural elasticity. And when you take a towel and rub it around your eyes, there is an increased chance that dark spots will form.
Start patting. Also, use a different towel to the one you dry your hands with.
Sleeping On The Wrong Type Of Pillowcase
Is there a wrong and a right type of pillowcase? You bet! Sleeping on a cotton one is bad for your skin. It causes trauma to your skin which can lead to a breakdown in collagen. Once this happens, creases and wrinkles develop – and they don’t go away.
Your best bet is to sleep on silk or satin pillowcases.
Failing To Wash Your Hands Before You Wash Your Face
I always wash my hands before I wash my face. I’m not saying this to sound all high and mighty, but guess what? I do sound all high and mighty. The reason? Because the amount of women who don’t wash their hands before rinsing their face is astonishing.
If you’re part of the club, it’s time you joined a new one. If you wash your face without properly cleaning your hands, you’re transferring all kinds of nasty dirt, oil and bacteria from your fingers to your skin. And this could be the prime reason you suffer from acne breakouts of even red skin. Change your habits!
You Use The Same Moisturiser All The Time
Many women rely on the same moisturiser all year round.
“I always use it. It works best for me, so why would I want to change?”
The thing is that seasons are subject to change. And when they change, so does your skin. What works in the summer doesn’t work in the winter because the air is completely different.
During the summer you should apply a light moisturiser, while a heavy one works in the winter. This is because dry skin that’s affected by the winter air needs more hydration, while your skin during the summer needs less.
Using Hot Water
While none of us apply boiling hot water to our skin and scold ourselves (I hope!), some ladies use water that is a little bit too hot when cleansing their skin.
For example, hot showers are the norm for some of us. It helps us to wind down – but it ensures the breakout of acne. Why? Because water that is too hot breaks down your skin’s protective top layer.
Use lukewarm water instead for better results.
Neglecting To Remove Your Makeup For Bed
It’s bed time and you’re exhausted. Either you’ve had a long day at work or you’ve been out partying. Either way, you’ve don’t want to remove your makeup. To heck with it!
It’s odd that we all brush our teeth before bed, but many of us can’t find the strength to remove our makeup. The truth is that removing your makeup before bed should be as much of a priority as cleaning your teeth.
It’s especially important that you remove your makeup after a night of partying, because the chances are that you’re wearing more makeup than usual.
Using A Cleaning Brush
If your mom was anything like mine, she would have used a cleaning brush when you were a child. Then, as you get older, she introduced it to you. Perhaps you still use it today. After all, mom knows best, right?
Hmm, not in this case. Cleaning brushes are just too harsh for your skin. The more you tear at it, the more it will get damaged.
Not Using Products Because “They’re Too Expensive”
Sure, some products are expensive. But if you shop around and focus on the ingredients and not the label, you’ll be able to get yourself a great deal.
Products that are rich in vitamin C, peptides and retinoids are essential for healthy skin.
